The Number of Children: Under Age Five in the Population by County, New Mexico, 2018
Indicator Report Data View Options
Why Is This Important?
Understanding the demographic characteristics of New Mexico's youth population is critical for shaping public and private programs and policies. The number of children in the under-five age range (infants, toddlers, and pre-schoolers) determines the demand for daycare and early-education programs, health care, and other social services that many families rely upon daily. Because childrens' brain growth and skill development starts from early infancy, public education and health policies that promote healthy maturation through the earliest years can create a foundation for later school achievement and, ultimately, success in adulthood. Also, due to their size, physiology, and behavior, young children are disproportionately vulnerable to many health hazards. Children breathe, drink, and eat more per unit of body weight than adults, so they may experience higher rates of exposure to whatever environmental contaminants or pathogens may be present.

Data Issues
All population estimates apply to July 1 of the selected year. These estimates are considered the most accurate estimates for the state of New Mexico and should match those found on the University of New Mexico Geospatial and Population Studies website. Estimates include decimal fractions. Census tract population estimates were summed to produce County and Small Area population estimates. Population estimate totals may vary due to rounding. Population estimates for previous years are occasionally revised as new information becomes available. When publishing trend data, always be sure that your rates for earlier years match current rates on NM-IBIS that have been calculated with the most up-to-date population estimates.Health Topic Pages Related to: Population Demographic Characteristics - Age 0-5
