Severe Maternal Morbidity

Severe Maternal Morbidity among in-hospital deliveries where the discharge record indicates a diagnosis or procedure indicating Severe Maternal Morbidity (not including transfusion). New Mexico uses the case definition and ICD-10 coding from the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health's SMM code list updated 8-9-2021 [[a href= https://view.officeapps.live.com/op/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Fsaferbirth.org%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2FUpdated-AIM-SMM-Code-List_10152021.xlsx]]

Measure description: Severe Maternal Morbidity per 10,000 birth hospitalizations Technical notes: New Mexico community hospitals: This query includes only births in 'community' hospitals in New Mexico. Community hospitals are defined as short-term, non-Federal, general, and other hospitals, excluding hospital units of other institutions (e.g., prisons). Community hospitals that provide long-term care are excluded. Indian Health Services hospitals and other federally funded hospitals are not required to report to HIDD and are therefore excluded. Person-level Inclusion criteria: To be included in the analysis, the person must be female, ages 12 to 55 and have given birth in a community hospital. People who live out of state and who gave birth in on of the reporting institutions are included.

Unit of analysis: the unit of analysis is the in-hospital delivery event. The date (year) of the event is the discharge date. Person-level inclusion criteria: Female patient ages 12 - 55 years In-hospital delivery: is determined using ICD-10 coding for diagnosis or procedures. It is defined as any diagnosis or procedure indicating live birth, delivery, or cesarean delivery. If the record also includes abortion, ectopic pregnancy or other events that are not births, they are excluded.

The severe maternal morbidity data in this NM-IBIS query module are maintained by the Family Health Bureau, Public Health Division, New Mexico Department of Health.
