Mortality Query Measure Selection

Death Certificate Data

The mortality data in this IBIS-Q query module derive from death certificates in participation with the New Mexico Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics and the National Vital Statistics System. They include virtually all deaths of New Mexico residents, including deaths that happened outside the state.

Population Data

{{class RedText NOTE: On January 16, 2025, the NM-IBIS and NMTracking POPULATION ESTIMATES FOR YEARS **2010 THROUGH 2023** WERE REPLACED. Data from the 2020 decennial census were used to update the estimates. Rates calculated using the NM-IBIS and NMTracking web-based queries are affected. Any rates that use population denominators that were calculated after January 16, 2025 will be different from those calculated prior to that date. We apologize for the inconvenience.}}

{{class OrangeText **NOTE** **NOTE** **NOTE**}}

{{class BoldOrange The 2024 mortality data are using 2023 population estimates to calculate rates. The 2024 population estimates will be available soon.}}

      Query First
      Deaths - Count
      The number of deaths in the selected year(s), geography(ies) or group(s).
      selectselect
      Crude Rates, Standard Query
      Deaths per 100,000 persons in the population. Table includes the crude death rate, upper and lower 95% confidence interval limits for the rate, number of deaths, and number in the population used to calculate the rate.
      selectselect
      Crude Rates, 3-Year Rolling Averages (Overlapping 3-Year Groups)
      Rolling averages are used to "smooth" trend lines that would otherwise be unstable. Often, the population size will be too small to yield a smooth trend line. By combining multiple years, the data will be more stable. "Rolling averages" are overlapping, aggregated year groups. They are overlapped so that more data points may be displayed, and also so the line shows changes more gradually.
      selectselect
      Crude Rates, 5-Year Rolling Averages (Overlapping 5-Year Groups)
      Rolling averages are used to "smooth" trend lines that would otherwise be unstable. Often, the population size will be too small to yield a smooth trend line. By combining multiple years, the data will be more stable. "Rolling averages" are overlapping, aggregated year groups. selectselect
      Age-adjusted Rates, Standard Query
      Deaths per 100,000 persons in the population, standardized to the age distribution of the U.S. 2000 population. Age-adjusted rates are useful for comparing geographies and population groups with different age distributions. The results table includes the age-adjusted death rate, upper and lower 95% confidence interval limits for the rate, number of deaths, and number in the population.
